Uncovering Phenotypes of Alcohol Use Disorder for Personalized Medicine

Some people drink because it makes them feel good, while others drink to relieve negative feelings and withdrawal symptoms. It is likely that people who drink for different reasons will need different medications to treat their alcohol use disorder. It's also possible that there are different biological reasons that cause alcohol use disorder that will require different types of treatments. Therefore we want to understand what are the motivating reasons for drinking and what types of medications are the best treatments for individuals. This treatment approach is called personalized medicine.
